Frank Farrell, 90, passed away peacefully after a short illness, on January 24, 2018. He was born April 22, 1927 to Frank and Gertrude Farrell.
Frank spent his youth in Union, NJ and he always considered Union his home town. He was a proud graduate of St. Benedicts Preparatory School in Newark, NJ. He captained the football team while there. He attended the University of Vermont and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Economics. While at Vermont, he was a member of the football team for 3 years. He played on the offensive, defensive, kickoff and recovery teams. He rarely if ever saw the bench. His love of football continued all his life. He was a football official for over 40 years and was assigned to many important games.
Frank was in the field of education for over 40 years. He received his Masters Degree from Rutgers and his principal and supervisors certificate from Keane College. He coached football at Mountain Lakes, Point Pleasant Beach, Plainfield and Raritan High Schools. He was the athletic director at Raritan High School for over 25 years. He served as President of the Shore Conference.
Frank loved boating, and water skiing as well as snow skiing in Vermont and Colorado. He met the love of his life, Pat, while skiing and they have been married for 46 years. He loved to play golf with his friends and had 3 “holes in one.”
He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was part of the “greatest generation.”
Frank was a communicant of the Church of the Ascension in Bradley Beach where he served as Eucharistic Minister, usher, member of the St. Francis Association, and the Holy Name Society.
He was predeceased by his beloved son Timothy in 2009. He is survived by his wife Pat, his daughter Meghan (Gaetano) Ricciardone, and his daughter-in-law Heather Farrell. He will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren Leila Farrell and Joseph Timothy Ricciardone. He is also survived by his in-laws Maureen and Chuck Wennogle, Susan Rubell Brennan, and Joanne and Don Barnes. He will be remembered by his nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends of many years. There was never anyone that Frank met that did not become his friend instantly.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4-8 pm Saturday and 2-6 pm Sunday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 am Monday at the Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach. Burial will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Glendola.
