Condolence From: Mary Knecht Shepard
Condolence: Dr. Lake,

You were my favorite teacher in high school. I so appreciate how much blood, sweat and teachers you put into each one of your students, including me. You made me believe in myself. You told me I could do whatever I sent my mind to do. I thought of you often throughout the years and always hoped that we would meet again. I'm so sad that I never got to tell you this in person. You will always live on in my heart. May your memory be a blessing now and always.

Your loyal student,
Mary Knecht Shepard

Condolence: To Elsa's Family and Friends, I am truly saddened by the passing of one of the sweetest, kindest and pleasant ladies I know. Elsa & Floyd were clients of the insurance agency that my father and then myself operated since 1960. I would enjoy her visits to my office to come in and make her insurance payment that took all of 5 minutes but we would talk for another 20!. She loved her family and would share stories of how good they were to her and proud she was of her nieces and nephews. I will miss her visits. May she rest in peace and in live in your hearts always. Condolence: I just got a copy of her obit and want you to know that I had the utmost respect for Elsa, both as a teacher and a friend. In addition to a professional relationship, we knitted together and occasionally had breakfast together even after our retirements. No one took her students' problems more to heart or gave more of herself to her job. I will always remember her as a very special human being.

Condolence: To the Family of the one teacher I always held close to my heart. A true educator who taught me to learn and not memorize. Classroom memories from "Ayuda X" to the special platform built just for her because of her height. Her influence on my life will never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace Dr. Lake

Condolence: Dear Family and Friends of Elsa Lake,

I was blessed to study in "Dr. Lake's" class for two years. In those two years I learned just about all I needed to become a Spanish teacher myself! She was thorough in her teaching and commanded respect in the classroom. She was stern but exhibited a sense of humor. Many times I have shared special memories of her both in the classroom and after graduation.

I will share one such memory. Spanish has many cognates, words that sound alike in both languages. One day in class during conversation I tried to say that I was embarrassed. So, I said, "estoy embarazada." Well, although it sounds like embarrassed, it means "I'm pregnant!" Dr. Lake quietly called me to her desk and explained my error! And then I was REALLY embarrassed!

Dr. Lake was a fabulous teacher! I saved many of the notes and handouts from her classes and used them in my own professional career. I am truly thankful to the Lord for having put Elsa Lake in my path.
May you all have the peace that surpasses all understanding as you grieve.

In His love,
Charlotte (Frank) Kelly '68

Condolence: Sincere condolences to the friends and family of Senora Lake. I am one of her thousand students who were influenced by her. I had 4 years of Spanish with her and still thank her often in conversation talking about teachers who had influence. I recently emailed her, last fall just before the holidays. Was lovely to hear back from her. Please know how much she was loved and how much she influenced us children of the 60's. OTHS class of 69

Condolence: Senora Lake,
You were my Spanish teacher back in the late 1960s at OTHS. I still recall you telling us how you left Cuba and how you could not practice law here, so you taught Spanish. I'm glad you did, because I went on to work with Mexico on wildlife issues that the two countries share, and my knowledge of the language helped cooperation. I live in Virginia now, and my sister sent me the sad news because we were talking about our high school teachers recently, and she (who took French) remembered I mentioned you. I remember more about you than almost any teacher I ever had in high school, and it all was for good things.

Mi maestro, gracias y descansa en paz.
