Obituary for Stephen G. Pappayliou

Stephen G.  Pappayliou
Stephen G. “Steve” Pappayliou, 90, of Interlaken, died suddenly Monday morning, February 13, 2017, in Virginia. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Des Pappayliou. He is survived by his sister, Stacia Apostolos, Chevy Chase, MD; his two sons, George Pappayliou and his wife Roberta, Southport, NC and Ted Pappayliou and his wife Anne, West Allenhurst; his daughter, Connie Karagias and her husband Louis, Toms River; his six grandchildren, Katie Pappayliou, Diane Pappayliou, Steve Pappayliou, Chris Pappayliou, Nick Pappayliou and Maria Karagias; and many loving nephews, nieces, and dear friends.

Born in Asbury Park, Steve grew up in Allenhurst and was educated in the public schools of Asbury Park, where he starred in athletics, captaining the Blue Bishop football team his senior year. He was graduated early in December, 1943 in order to join the United States Navy where he proudly served for the duration of the Second World War. After the war he attended Syracuse University, from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1949. While at Syracuse he was an active member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity. After graduation he worked in a family business, the Goodie Tea Shoppe on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, before marrying in 1952 and taking a job as a salesman at Park Chevrolet. He remained at Park Chevrolet for most of five decades, working from October through May each year, and had many long term and loyal customers. During the summers, for over 30 years, he owned and operated The Sampler Inn, Ocean Grove with his brother-in-law, Bill Apostolos. He was a Free and Accepted Mason and proud member of the Asbury Jordan Lodge #142. Steve was also a member of the Thomas A. Edison #287 Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association). After his retirement, he served as a councilman in his hometown of Interlaken. Steve was an avid golfer and fisherman, a dedicated Syracuse fan and a devoted follower of the athletic exploits of his grandchildren. He was an active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean Township, where he served on the Parish Council and for the past four decades, chaired the Cemetery Committee.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2017 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean Township.
