Obituary for Assunta F. Ege

Retired school librarian, Assunta (Sue) Lardieri Flannery Ege, passed away at age 90 on January 20, 2016. She lived in Tinton Falls.
Born in Newark, Sue majored in interior design at Arts High School and received the prestigious Bamberger Award for scholarship upon graduation in 1943. She began her library career working for the Newark Public Library.
Sue married John Flannery and they raised their four children in a home filled with love and laughter until John’s untimely death in 1965. She then moved to Highlands where she raised her children while working full-time and attending night school at Newark State College to earn her bachelor’s degree in Library Science.
Thanks to her NPL credentials, Sue was hired as the school librarian at the Memorial Elementary School in Union Beach and later at the Markham Place School in Little Silver. She retired in 1987.
After many years of being on her own, a chance meeting at a church discussion group in 1983 introduced her to Karl Ege who was to become her second husband. Spending 32 years together, they had many adventures travelling locally and globally including a life-long dream trip to the glaciers in Alaska.
In her spare time, Sue loved to sew and utilized her design skills to create her a personalized line of Christmas decorations and quilts. She also baked elaborate special occasion cakes. Sue always believed her greatest role was raising four accomplished and independent children. Spending time with her family brought her immense joy.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, Karl Ege, parents, Peter and Mary (Grande) Lardieri and sister, Dolores Saxe . She is survived by her sister, Josephine Lardieri, brother, Peter and his wife Diane Lardieri; son, Jack Flannery (Nina Flannery), daughters Susan Flannery (Stephen Coren), Karen (Bruce) Peirce, Rosemary Flannery and beloved grandchildren Zoe and Zachary Peirce. She also leaves behind many devoted nieces, nephews and cousins as well as step-children, Karl Ege, Jr. and Douglas Ege and their families.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Highlands on Monday, January 25 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made in Sue’s name to the OLPH Food Pantry, 103 Center Avenue, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716. Condolences may be left on Fiore’s online guest book at www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
