Mari Carmen Escandon, 84, of Brick Township, died Friday, September 30, 2011 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
She was born in Tudela, Spain and came to the United States in 1954 following her brothers, Drs. Alfonso and Rafael Garbayo to pursue a career in nursing. While living in Jersey City, she worked as a registered nurse at Mary Hague Hospital. She then worked at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch for many years before retiring. She lived in Oakhurst, Ocean Township and in Deal before moving to Brick in 2008.
She was a communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, West End, Long Branch and St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Deal. She enjoyed travelling the world and was a great cook and seamstress. Carmen was beloved by her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard in 1996, her parents, Julio and Mercedes Garbayo and her siblings, Sr. Maria Ines, Jose Ignacio, Antonio, Rafael and Alfonso.
Surviving are her sons, Dr. Pedro and his wife Dr. Sandra Escandon of Brick and the Honorable Paul X. Escandon and his wife Mimi Sherlock of Loch Arbour; brothers and sisters, Juan Pedro, Maria Jose and Javier all of Spain and Sr. Mari Victoria of Beirut and Sr. Ana Maria of Cairo and 6 grandchildren, Sofia, Joseph, Henry, Amaya, Mercedes and Lucas and numerous nieces and nephews in the united states and abroad.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4 to 8 pm Wednesday at Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 am Thursday at St. Mary's Church, Deal.
